OpenAI Steps Into Hollywood Spotlight with New Video-Making Tool

OpenAI has just revealed a new artificial intelligence tool that can make super-realistic videos, and it's making its big entrance into Hollywood. The system can make videos with complex scenes, lots of characters, different shots, and pretty accurate details. They showed off short videos made in minutes, responding to a brief text, like a movie trailer with an astronaut on a desert planet or an animated creature by a melting candle.

Other AI video tools exist, but OpenAI's is growing fast and could replace many jobs. The entertainment industry is already dealing with AI, with a study of 300 leaders in Hollywood saying AI could lead to job cuts. About three-fourths said AI might eliminate or reduce jobs at their companies, affecting around 204,000 positions in the next three years.

Sound engineers, voice actors, and concept artists might face job losses, and even visual effects and postproduction work could be at risk. This worries professionals like Karla Ortiz, a concept artist on Marvel titles, who sees this as a competition with tech. Reid Southen, credited on films like The Hunger Games, notices less demand for his work and considers leaving the industry.

Most AI video generators struggle with video length and real-world physics issues. OpenAI's tool, called Sora, can generate up to a minute of content with good quality and consistency, allowing for shot changes. But there are problems, like in a video where a woman's legs switch sides. OpenAI admits Sora has weaknesses, especially in simulating complex scenes and understanding cause and effect.

Sora won't be released publicly until it passes safety tests. OpenAI is seeking feedback from experts and is working on tools to detect misleading content. They plan to tag videos as AI-created and reject prompts violating usage policies.

OpenAI didn't disclose the training materials but faces lawsuits accusing it of using copyrighted books. The company no longer reveals its data sources to stay competitive. Some lawsuits might force OpenAI to destroy systems trained on copyrighted material.

Another AI, Midjourney, started making nearly exact film frame replicas, worrying artists like Ortiz. The commercial production industry might suffer as AI video tools become popular, impacting quality. In Los Angeles, commercial shooting has declined since 2018, reaching a seven-year low in 2023, not counting the pandemic-hit 2020.
